Negative People – Should You Avoid Them?
When it comes to being a more positive person yourself, there is a lot of advice around on how you should handle negative people. Where some people will tell you to avoid them, others won’t. Here is a quick guide to the arguments both for and against avoiding those who are negative in your quest to be happy.
YES! You Should Avoid Them
Many positive thinking coaches tell you to try and get negative people out of your life. This is simply because when you’re trying to be positive yourself, someone else being negative about life can really drag you down or slow down your efforts. Not only this, but it’s very easy to pick up on other people’s habits. You might soon complain more about the type of thing they complain about – or perhaps their negativity just makes you feel down.
NO You Shouldn’t Avoid Them
The argument for not avoiding other negative people is that avoiding them in itself is a negative thing for you to do. You cannot expect everyone to be the same as you, and you may even see it positively. Try thinking of it like this – whilst their negative thinking might rub off on you, perhaps your positive thinking will rub off on them, improving life for the both of you.
Conclusion
Ultimately it may not be possible to cut negative people out of your life. Breaking important relationships could do you more harm than good. However, you can use your judgement to avoid being with people who are overly negative as much as you used to. Try to do some good and make them more positive, but remember that ultimately, people are all different. Sometimes we can’t change others, but we can always change ourselves and the way we think.
