Why I Started How To Think Positive
I first launched How To Think Positive a few years ago, without knowing much about what I wanted to do with it. In many respects, I am still learning, and this website is a place for people to share in that journey together.
I first started to struggle with negative thinking and excessive worry in 2006, as a university student. I had always been self-conscious and shy, but by then I would obsess over things that didn’t matter, like going over and over something “stupid” I said to someone, and imagining extremely unlikely events, such as planes crashing or bad things happening to loved ones.
My life itself wasn’t “bad” but my thoughts were making it so. It felt like being trapped in my head. At one point, I couldn’t think straight because of all the thoughts that would run through my mind. I was too scared to get help, and didn’t realise how destructive they were.
The worst thing was when negative thinking was holding me back in personal relationships, and from pursuing the life I wanted to live. Deep inside I would think about my personality, and was afraid that nobody in my life could ever see the real me as the negativity, worry and anxiety changed the way I acted.
How I Changed
Learning to keep those thoughts at bay is something that took work, and a lot of reflection. It’s still not easy to share, but I am sure that sharing has helped me more than I ever imagined. I am still plagued by the idea that other people judge me, but the truth is that we are our own worst critics.
I have learnt a lot since 2006. At first, I thought that negative thinking was a part of my personality. Now I know that negative thinking is a choice you make - maybe not unconsciously, but a choice nonetheless.
Unfortunately, though, I’m not here to tell you that becoming a positive thinker is as simple as deciding you will be one. You’ve probably tried and failed already, which is why you’re here. There’s no magic pill for becoming a positive person. It takes action, but thankfully there are real concrete methods you can use to “re-train” your brain and change the bad habits you’ve picked up in life.
Know that I am here, speaking from the heart, going through the same ups and downs as you. I know how much of a burden negative thoughts can be, but I have also seen the light and the fact that you can change your habits. It’s my desire to show you that too.
I hope you’ll join me in my journey, through the ups and downs, as we use real actionable advice (no, this isn’t wishy-washy content that tells you WHAT but does not tell you HOW) to change our thinking for the better.
Note that I don’t provide medical advice – simply a few tips that have worked for me! I am not a doctor but I am someone who has gone through everything I write about.
